Book tickets

Acclaimed film composer and pianist Jean-Michel Bernard returns to the Coronet Theatre with a tribute to acclaimed film composer Lalo Schifrin (Mission: Impossible, Bullitt, Dirty Harry).

Jean-Michel Bernard will be joined by special guest singers Noah Francis Johnson and Kimiko Ono.

Argentinian born pianist Lalo Schifrin is a conductor and composer who has written over 100 scores for both television & the cinema including the memorable themes to Mission: Impossible (1966), Mannix (1967), Starsky and Hutch (1975), Cool Hand Luke (1967), and Bullitt (1968). Schifrin has regularly worked alongside Clint Eastwood (another jazz music aficionado) on numerous contributions including the themes to all the Dirty Harry films. During his illustrious career, Schifrin has received four Grammy Awards, and six Oscar nominations.

Schifrin received his classical music training in both Argentina & France, and is a highly respected jazz pianist. On moving back to Buenos Aires in the mid 1950s, Schifrin formed his own big band, and was noticed by jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie, who asked him to become his pianist and arranger. In addition to his jazz and cinema compositions, he has conducted the London Philarmonic Orchestra, the Houston Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philarmonic, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and many others.

Additional Information

Jean-Michel Bernard, whom Ray Charles described as a “genius” and Lalo Schifrin called his “soul brother” works at the crossroads of musical genres. A composer, orchestrator, producer, concert pianist, he is not exactly a classical pianist, nor a jazz pianist (even if he has the improvisational freedom and swing), but is known as an exceptional pianist of music for cinema. Jean-Michel Bernard is the only official Steinway artist in the film music sector, and has worked as a member of Ray Charles’ Quartet, a collaborator of Scorsese and Morricone, and as a composer for Michel Gondry amongst others.“I cannot find words to reflect my admiration for his genius” – Lalo Schifrin (Composer of Mission ImpossibleBullittDirty HarryMannix)

Noah Francis Johnson has performed and collaborated with many artists such as; Lenny KravItz, Soul and Jazz poet Gil Scott Heron, Jamiroquai, Puddle of Mudd, Wu-Tang, Royce Da 5’9″, Slayer, among many others. His openness and ability to blend any genre with his passion and extraordinary vocal gift has endeared him to perform to live audiences on many stages at festivals to world-class venues. His earlier project “Johnson” prompted Q Magazine to quote one of the penned tracks as “Genius” and another to be remixed by Frankie Knuckles, becoming a dance floor classic. Noah’s Rock project earned him an accolade from NME stating that “Noah has the funk of the Red Hot Chillis and the Soul of Marvin Gaye“. Throughout his musical journey Noah has always treated each genre with reverence whilst turning them into his own sound tracks and painting them with his soulful brush.
