Surtitles

Given our international programme, many of our productions are performed in their original language. Please check the production pages on our website for details about each show. When surtitles are required, they are shown on screens or projected into the auditorium. The text is displayed in real time alongside the spoken lines, allowing you to follow the performance as it unfolds.

The size and positioning of the surtitles will vary depending on the production’s design, but they are always placed with the aim of providing the best possible view for the entire auditorium. Please do call the box office if you have any concerns about being able to see the Surtitles.

Latecomers

If you arrive late for the start of a performance or after an interval, we understand you will want to take your seat as quickly as possible, and we will do our best to assist you. Our auditorium is small and intimate, so any movement during the performance is particularly noticeable. To minimise disruption to fellow audience members and performers, you may be asked to wait until a suitable break in the performance before being admitted, and not necessarily to your original seat. In some cases, this may not be possible once the performance has begun.

If latecomers cannot be admitted, this will be stated clearly in your pre‑show email. Please check this in advance to avoid disappointment.

Content Warnings

Live theatre can be loud, bright, and even shocking at times. The effects we use, or the themes explored in our productions, may evoke strong emotions. While this is part of what makes live performance so powerful, we also recognise that certain effects or subject matter can be challenging for some audience members.

We will always give clear notice of specific sensory triggers such as flashing lights, strobe effects, loud or sudden noises, and serious, clearly defined themes of a potentially triggering nature, such as depictions of sexual assault. However, in the interest of allowing the art to speak for itself, we may use broader descriptions for other content warnings. For example, we might state that a production contains ‘scenes of violence’ rather than specifically detailing that Hamlet dies.

As many of our projects are UK and World Premieres, exact content warnings can be hard to determine until close to opening night. Please check the pre-show email, but the latest will be displayed on the website, in your digital freesheet, and on signage in the Theatre. However, we understand that some audience members prefer to have more detailed information, so if you would like to discuss a production’s content in more detail, our friendly Box Office team will be happy to help.

Age Guidance

We also provide age guidance for many productions. This guidance is a suggestion, not a restriction, as we know that parents and guardians are best placed to decide what is suitable for the children in their care. Our recommendations take into account the production’s themes, the presence and intensity of any violence, and whether the piece is likely to be understood and appreciated by younger audiences.
